چکیده

The study shows that leaf area index (LAI) and canopy chlorophyll content can be mapped in a heterogeneous Mediterranean grassland from canopy spectral reflectance measurements. Canopy spectral measurements were made in the field using a GER 3700 spectroradiometer, along with concomitant in situ measurements of LAI and chlorophyll content. We tested the utility of univariate techniques, involving narrow band vegetation indices and the red edge inflection point, as well as multivariate calibration techniques, such as partial least squares regression. Among the various investigated models, canopy chlorophyll content was estimated with the highest accuracy (Rcv = 0.74, relative RMSEcv = 0.35) and LAI was estimated with intermediate accuracy (Rcv = 0.67). Compared with narrow band indices and red edge inflection point, partial least squares regression generally improved the estimation accuracies. The results of the study highlight the significance of using multivariate techniques such as partial least squares regression rather than univariate methods such as vegetation indices for providing enhanced estimates of heterogeneous grass canopy characteristics. To date, partial least squares regression has seldom been applied for studying heterogeneous grassland canopies. However, it can provide a useful exploratory and predictive tool for mapping and monitoring heterogeneous grasslands.

Multivariate statistical methods for estimating grassland leaf area index and chlorophyll content using hyperspectral measurements

Grassland habitat covers about one-quarter of the Earth’s land surface, providing significant contribution to the world’s total agricultural production, plant biodiversity, and carbon sequestration. The advent of hyperspectral remote sensing and the future launch of planned spaceborne hyperspectral missions will open up new possibilities over conventional multispectral RS to better quantify gra...

Inversion of a radiative transfer model for estimating vegetation LAI and chlorophyll in a heterogeneous grassland

Radiative transfer models have seldom been applied for studying heterogeneous grassland canopies. Here, the potential of radiative transfer modeling to predict LAI and leaf and canopy chlorophyll contents in a heterogeneous Mediterranean grassland is investigated. The widely used PROSAIL model was inverted with canopy spectral reflectance measurements by means of a look-up table (LUT). Canopy s...

Towards red-edge positions less sensitive to canopy biophysical parameters for leaf chlorophyll estimation using properties optique spectrales des feuilles (PROSPECT) and scattering by arbitrarily inclined leaves (SAILH) simulated data

Several methods for extracting the chlorophyll sensitive red-edge position (REP) from hyperspectral data are reported in literature. This study is a continuation of a recent paper published as ‘A new technique for extracting the red edge position from hyperspectral data: the linear extrapolation method’. The method was validated experimentally for estimation of foliar nitrogen concentrations of...

Quick Estimation of Apple (Red Delicious and Golden Delicious) Leaf Area and Chlorophyll Content

ABSTRACT- The evaluation of leaf area and leaf nutritional value is important for crop growth modeling and estimations of its performance. The purpose of this study was to use image processing techniques to develop an economical method to ease the assessment of nutrient status and leaf area (LA) of plants and to compare the outcomes of this method with linear models. Leaf area and leaf chloroph...
